NIH Launches Online Resource on Interventions to Reduce Health Disparities and Improve Minority Health

A new online resource, designed to provide easy access to interventions that improve minority health and reduce health disparities, was recently unveiled by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD).

The resource, called the HDPulse Interventions Portal, complements an existing Data Portal to help researchers, health care providers, and community groups address health disparities and improve minority health. It allows users to make informed, actionable decisions about appropriate interventions for specific populations in their communities.

The HDPulse Interventions Portal is a repository of proven evidence-based interventions. With this portal, users can find interventions that are relevant to their communities. They can also review supporting materials and use the information to implement evidence-based interventions. This portal aims to increase the dissemination and adoption of evidence-based interventions and contributes to closing the research-to-practice gap in health disparities.

The portal makes it easy for users to search, filter and compare the interventions based on a variety of factors, including:

  • The population for which the intervention was tested (such as sexual and gender minorities, people with disabilities, and specific racial and ethnic minority groups).
  • The diseases, disorders, and conditions targeted by the intervention (such as cardiovascular diseases, mental and behavioral disorders, and various cancers).
  • The geographical area where the intervention was tested (such as rural, suburban, or urban locations) and the U.S. state or territory where the research was conducted.
  • The location where the intervention is intended to be delivered (such as at home, at school, or in a health care facility).

Each intervention includes supporting materials—publications, outreach and publicity efforts, participant education tools, instruments or measurement tools—and contact information for intervention developers.

“The Interventions Portal is a resource that helps advance NIMHD’s mission,” says NIMHD Director Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, M.D. “Communities across the country are seeking ways to improve health outcomes from cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other conditions, and this portal can be a helpful resource to support their efforts.”

Researchers focused on minority health and health disparities science and interventions are encouraged to submit their research to be considered for inclusion in the Interventions Portal. All interventions in the portal must meet eligibility requirements, such as real-world positive outcomes for the study population, a scientifically established study design, and prior publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

In addition to the new Interventions Portal, HDPulse provides a comprehensive resource for national-, state-, county- and territory- level data on minority health and health disparities. The HDPulse Data Portal launched in 2017 to provide a wide range of statistics on health disparities across the United States. This portal provides publicly accessible data visualizations that illustrate and explain health disparities data. The visualizations include maps that show how minority health and health disparities vary geographically. Users can also see how minority health and health disparities change over time.

Together, the Interventions Portal and the Data Portal make HDPulse a valuable resource for anyone striving to reduce health disparities and improve minority health.

Over time, these HDPulse resources will continue to expand as new research is submitted and reviewed for inclusion in the portals.
