Career Development Awards

NIMHD supports Research Career Development Awards (K series) for senior level postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists is available to address the Nation’s biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs.

Below are the K series awards supported by NIMHD:

K01 – Mentored Research Scientist Career Development Award
K01 awards support postdoctoral or early career research scientists committed to research who need advanced research training and additional experience.

K08 – Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award
K08 awards support promising clinical scientists with demonstrated aptitude to develop into independent investigators, or faculty members to pursue research, and aid in filling the academic faculty gap in the health profession’s institutions.

K23 - Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Awards
K23 awards support the career development of clinically trained professionals who have made a commitment to patient-oriented research, and who have the potential to develop into productive, clinical investigators.

K99-R00 – Pathway to Independence Awards
K99/R00 awards support an initial mentored research experience (K99) followed by independent research (R00) for highly qualified, postdoctoral researchers, to secure an independent research position. Recipients of these awards are expected to compete successfully for independent R01 support during the R00 phase.

The Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) Postdoctoral Career Transition Awards to Promote Diversity for individuals are mentored, postdoctoral training positions funded by a participating NIH Institute or Center. Visit the MOSAIC program page for details and funding opportunity links.
