Special issue addresses need for expanded research efforts to understand connection between structural racism and discrimination and minority health and health disparities.

WHAT:
The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), part of the National Institutes of Health, sponsored a special issue of Ethnicity & Disease that examines the impact of structural racism and discrimination on minority health and health disparities.

In the Ethnicity & Disease supplement “Structural Racism and Discrimination: Impact on Minority Health and Health Disparities,” original research articles explore associations between structural factors such as inequities in mortgage regulation, wage theft, and intensified immigration enforcement, and poor health outcomes. Commentaries and editorials encourage expanding health disparities research to incorporate structural racism and discrimination, as well as offering insights and recommendations. The supplement also describes the implementation of interventions and provides a conceptual model for future research across different racial and ethnic minority groups.

WHO:
Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, M.D., director of NIMHD and Jennifer Alvidrez Ph.D., program official, Division of Extramural Scientific Programs, NIMHD, are available for comment.
