Research on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) to Prevent HIV in Populations Experiencing Health Disparities
NIH Guide Number: RFA-MD-18-003
Council Date: June 6, 2017
Objectives
This initiative will support projects that examine PrEP attitudes, use and adherence among populations experiencing health disparities in the US.
Description of Initiative
This initiative will support observational, health services, or intervention projects that examine PrEP attitudes, use, and adherence among populations experiencing health disparities in the US. Projects may involve quantitative/qualitative data collection and/or secondary analysis of existing data. For intervention studies, projects should focus on high risk groups identified by the CDC guidelines and may support strategies to increase access or adherence to PrEP but not the direct administration of PrEP. Areas of specific interest related to population experiencing health disparities include but are not limited to the following:
- National or health care system-wide patterns of PrEP use, and adherence in diverse racial/ethnic, SES, and geographic populations
- Patient factors (HIV risk group, demographic factors, cultural beliefs, etc.) that predict PrEP attitudes, use and adherence.
- Clinician-patient communication and decision-making about the initiation and sustained use of PrEP.
- Structural factors (e.g., local, state, or Federal policies and priorities; insurance coverage) that affect PrEP availability and use.
- The impact of PrEP on HIV and STI risk behavior and/or contraceptive use.
- Patient, provider, and/or system-level strategies to promote greater uptake and adherence to PrEP in populations experiencing health disparities or in settings that serve them.
