Collaborative Minority Health and Health Disparities Research with Tribal Epidemiology Centers (TEC)

NIH Guide Number: PAR-17-483 and PAR-17-484

Council Date: February 28, 2017

Objectives

The purpose of this initiative is to support collaborative research between Tribal Epidemiology Centers (TEC) and external investigators on topics related to minority health and health disparities in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations.

Description of Initiative

This initiative will support collaborative research between Tribal Epidemiology Centers (TEC) and external investigators on topics related to minority health and health disparities in AI/AN populations, with a particular emphasis on areas where there are significant gaps in data and knowledge. Such partnerships are proposed to support community-responsive, scientifically rigorous projects with findings disseminated to local stakeholders, Indian Health Service (IHS), and the scientific community. The applicant institution may be the organization that operates the TEC or the institution of the external researchers.

Projects may be observational or intervention studies and are expected to use data that has been or is currently being collected by the TEC(s). Primary data collection may be used to supplement existing data. Samples may consist exclusively of AI/AN populations or may include non-AI/AN populations as appropriate to address the particular research question. The appropriate pooling or comparison of data across multiple TECs is strongly encouraged. Projects that do not involve using TEC-generated data or public health interventions implemented and/or evaluated by the TEC are not responsive to this initiative.
