NIMHD Health Disparities Research Institute
The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) will host the Health Disparities Research Institute (HDRI) from July 23 - 27, 2018. The HDRI aims to support the research career development of promising minority health/health disparities research scientists early in their careers and stimulate research in the disciplines supported by health disparities science.
The program will feature lectures on minority health and health disparities research, small group discussions, mock grant review, and seminars. Institute participants will also have the opportunity to meet with NIH scientific staff engaged in related health disparities research across the various NIH Institutes and Centers.
Lectures and seminars will include etiology of health disparities, methods and measurement, intervention and implementation research. Participants will receive consultation on the development of research interests into an application – R21, R01, K award, as well as consultation on research strategies and methodologies for proposed studies, and opportunities to meet with NIMHD and other NIH program officials.
This program is intended for early stage research investigators. Applications will only be accepted from post-doctoral fellows, assistant professors, or individuals in similar early stage research career positions who are engaged in minority health and health disparities research. Early career researchers from diverse backgrounds interested in the conduct of health research, within academic, community-based, non-profit, and other non-academic settings, are encouraged to apply. Please note that NIH and HHS staff including persons doing fellowships or trainings (at NIH/HHS) are not eligible to apply, however, limited space may be available for auditing the morning lectures (email the HDRI planning committee at NIMHDHealthDC@mail.nih.gov for more information). Previous participants of the HDRI or the Translational Health Disparities Course are not eligible to apply.
Participants will be selected based on several criteria:
- Professional experience and educational achievements (as indicated in the NIH Biosketch)
- 2 letters of recommendation providing support for the candidate including evidence of potential success in health disparities research
- A brief essay outlining objectives for participation in the program
- An abstract including specific aims of research interest area
Preference will be given to candidates with the highest potential for implementing the knowledge gathered from the program into their research and routine practice and those who, with the benefit of this experience and network, are most likely to contribute substantially to their academic, organizational, or professional fields through teaching, research or professional practice.
Approximately 50 scholars will be selected to participate in the 2018 HDRI.
There is no cost for participating in the HDRI, but admission is competitive and daily attendance is mandatory. Participants are responsible for arranging transportation, room and board. Limited scholarships may be available to cover travel expenses.
