NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series – March 2013
In honor of Women's History Month, the National Institutes of Health welcomes Dr. Susan F. Wood as the speaker for the NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series on March 21, 2013.
Women have distinct health needs from men and efficient, effective health care systems can be designed to meet these needs. Women are bigger consumers of healthcare services than men for a variety of reasons: they live longer, they have a greater likelihood of experiencing chronic disease, and they frequently have greater need for reproductive care than men. They are also more likely to make healthcare decisions for other family members.
The development of health insurance exchanges under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) provides a unique opportunity to consider and address the health needs of women. Dr. Wood will discuss her work to inform the implementation of the ACA and its implications for the health of women based on a recent report she co-authored entitled Ensuring the Health Care Needs of Women: A Checklist for Health Exchanges. A collaboration of the Kaiser Family Foundation, the Jacobs Institute of Women's Health, and the Brigham and Women's Hospital, the checklist encourages policy makers to consider a broad range of questions as they develop exchanges that meet the needs of women from how to design a basic benefits package and what preventative services to include to how to ensure transparency and track success.
Dr. Wood has worked on health policy that addresses the needs of women for over 20 years. She is currently an Associate Professor of Health Policy at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services, and Director of the Jacob's Institute for Women's Health. Previously, she served as the Director of The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Office of Women's Health and as the Director for Policy and Program Development at the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Office of Women's Health. She has extensive experience on Capitol Hill working with leaders to build policy that is built on a foundation of scientific knowledge.
Dr. Wood received a PhD in Biology at Boston University and a Bachelor's degree from Southwestern at Memphis. She has received the FDA Commissioner's Special Citation, the HHS Secretary's Distinguished Service Award, and the Keystone Award in Women's Health Research.
