NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series – September 2013
In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the National Institutes of Health welcomes Dr. Nilda Peragallo Montano as the speaker for the NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series on September 19, 2013.
Hispanics bear a disproportionate burden of disease, injury, death and disability when compared to whites, and are at increased risk of multiple health conditions, including obesity, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections. Hispanics have the highest uninsured rates of any racial or ethnic group in the U.S. They are 1.2 times more likely to be obese than non-Hispanic whites, and 50 percent more likely to die from diabetes as non-Hispanic whites. Hispanic men are three times as likely to have either HIV infection or AIDS compared to non-Hispanic white men, and Hispanic women are four times as likely to have AIDS as non-Hispanic white women. Hispanic women contract cervical cancer at 1.6 times the rate of non-Hispanic white women. These disparities contribute to decreased quality of life and economic opportunities. Factors such as lack of access to preventive care, lack of health insurance, as well as language and cultural barriers contribute to these disparities.
In her presentation, Dr. Nilda Peragallo Montano will discuss her research at the University of Miami Center of Excellence for Health Disparities Research (El Centro) on the role that the co-occurrence of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, substance abuse, intimate partner violence and mental health conditions plays in the disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality among Hispanics. Studies include the intervention and prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, as well as family and intimate partner violence among Hispanic women, and substance abuse recovery among HIV-positive mothers. Through research, education, and collaboration with community and academic partners, El Centro advances the science of reducing health disparities in Hispanics, African Americans, sexual minorities and people in Caribbean nations and Latin America. Dr. Nilda Peragallo Montano is Dean and Professor in the School of Nursing and Health Studies at the University of Miami. She directs the NIMHD-funded University of Miami Center of Excellence for Health Disparities Research (El Centro), which she established in 2007. Dr. Peragallo Montano is a nationally and internationally recognized nursing scientist specializing in health disparities and culturally competent interventions with minority populations. She has a DrPH from the University of Texas, and received an MS in nursing from the University of West Virginia and a BS in nursing from the University of Chile.
