NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series - March 2014
In honor of National Nutrition Month, the National Institutes of Health welcomes Dr. Laura M. Bogart as the featured speaker for the NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series on March 20, 2014.
Since 1980, obesity prevalence among children and adolescents has almost tripled. Although some progress has been seen lately, approximately 17 percent of U.S. children are obese, and certain groups of children are more greatly affected. Obese children are more likely to become obese adults and suffer lifelong physical and mental health problems. The problem is influenced by many different factors. For example, it can be difficult for children to make healthy food choices and get enough physical activity when they are exposed to environments in their home, school, or community that promote increased consumption of less healthy food and physical inactivity.
In her presentation, Dr. Laura M. Bogart will discuss Students for Nutrition and eXercise (SNaX), a middle-school-based obesity-prevention intervention combining school-wide environmental changes, multimedia, encouragement to eat healthy school cafeteria foods, and peer-led education and marketing. She will describe partnerships with the Los Angeles Unified School District and other community stakeholders; review the results of the randomized controlled trial; and discuss the policy impact of the research and program dissemination activities.
