NIMHD 10-Year Anniversary Celebration
NIMHD was proud to celebrate 10 years as an Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2020. A range of events and online features commemorated our decade of work to advance minority health and eliminate health disparities. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak a global pandemic. Along with NIH and the world, NIMHD mounted a response, underscoring the importance of the Institute’s mission.
NIMHD 10: A Year in Review and a Path Forward
NIMHD Director Dr. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable reflects on the Institute's 10-year anniversary activities juxtaposed against the COVID-19 pandemic and looks forward to the work ahead. Collaboration, innovation and the role of social determinants in health disparities drive further exploration and research initiatives.

This review of NIMHD’s first 10 years highlights accomplishments that led to the Institute’s creation and reflections from individuals working toward an America in which all populations have an equal opportunity to live long, healthy, and productive lives.
10th Anniversary Scientific Symposium: Innovations to Promote Health Equity
This day-long scientific symposium featuring innovative discoveries, prominent researchers, and strategic discussions on minority health and health disparities was held just before the pandemic shifted most work to remote and online activities.
Active & Healthy Bingo Challenge
When the COVID-19 lockdown meant canceling the Minority Health 5K Walk/Run, NIMHD pivoted to create an online activity in its place. The Active and Healthy Bingo Challenge was sourced throughout the year by people encouraging positive thinking and behaviors during COVID-19’s darker days.
Envisioning Health Equity Art Challenge
Artists from around the country submitted original artwork to raise awareness about health disparities and encourage creative thinking about how we reach health equity. Three adults and three teens were recognized in first, second and third places based on quality, originality and creativity. See the winning artwork and learn what inspired the artists:
NIMHD Timeline Poster
This commemorative poster charts key milestones from the 1985 release of the HHS Report of the Secretary’s Task Force on Black and Minority Health documenting the existence of health disparities in the U.S., through NIMHD’s predecessor entities, to becoming the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities in 2010 and over the 10 years since.

NIMHD began in 1990 when the NIH Office of Minority Programs was established in the NIH Office of the Director, at the request of then HHS Secretary Dr. Louis Sullivan. The Office was elevated through three iterations of legislative authority. First, in 1993, it became the Office of Research on Minority Health; in 2000, the Office was elevated to the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities; and in 2010, the Center was re-designated the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Each transition provided a more defined role in NIH’s research agenda and greater funding authority to address minority health and health disparities. Dr. John Ruffin served as the founding director at each level of the organization.
