Dr. Leonardo Mariño-Ramírez is an Earl Stadtman Investigator working on epidemiology and genetics research at NIMHD’s Division of Intramural Research (DIR). He uses integrative approaches to solve complex and challenging biological problems that are focused on reducing health disparities in underrepresented populations of the United States. His research focuses on the combined analysis of genetic ancestry and electronic health records in large biobank cohorts to discover and map disease genes and their variants.

Prior to joining NIMHD, Dr. Mariño-Ramírez was a staff scientist at NIH’s National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). He is an adjunct professor of Graduate Programs in Bioinformatics at the Boston University and the Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Mariño-Ramírez has an educational background in microbiology and biochemistry. His post-doctoral training focused on the development of computational methods to study the molecular and cellular interactions that control gene expression in eukaryotes, along with the evolution of eukaryotic gene regulatory elements. More recently, he investigated genetic ancestry and admixture in underrepresented populations.

Dr. Mariño-Ramírez received a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from Universidad de Los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia. He holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Texas A&M University, College Station, TX. Dr. Mariño-Ramírez is the recipient of four Fulbright fellowships, is an editor for several peer-reviewed journals and is a founding member of the Panamerican Bioinformatics Institute.
