Dr. Jorge G. Muñiz Ortiz is a Program Officer in the Division of Integrative Biological and Behavioral Sciences where he focuses on research on biological and environmental factors that contribute to resilience and susceptibility to adverse health outcomes.

After graduating from Colegio San José in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico in 1998, Dr. Muñiz Ortiz attended the University of Dayton, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 2002. He subsequently graduated with his Ph.D. in Molecular Toxicogenetics from the University of Cincinnati in 2009. Dr. Muñiz Ortiz received further training in toxicology at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (2009-2012) as a Postdoctoral Fellow and at the North Carolina State University from July 2012 to June 2013 as a Postdoctoral Scholar. In 2013, he was called to active duty with the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service as a Toxicologist. His first tour of duty was with the science staff of the Office of Public Health Science within the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In December 2016, Dr. Muñiz Ortiz became a board-certified general toxicologist and joined the Risk Assessment Branch of the Antimicrobials Division of the Office of Pesticide Programs of the U.S. EPA. Prior to joining NIMHD, Dr. Muñiz Ortiz joined the Bureau of Primary Health Care at the Health Resources and Services Administration as an Investment Oversight Advisor managing grant expenditures of federally qualified community health centers.
