Angela Fernandez, Ph.D., M.P.H., LCSW

Dr. Angela Fernandez is a program officer in the Division of Community Health and Population Science at NIMHD.

A member of the Menominee Nation of Wisconsin, Dr. Fernandez’s research focuses on community-based prevention involving protective factors, cultural practices, place, and the natural environment among primarily American Indian and Alaska Native and other Indigenous Peoples, as well as Latino populations.

Nancy L. Jones, Ph.D., M.A.

Dr. Nancy Jones' research interests include the ethical, legal, and social ramifications that research, medicine, and healthcare have on underserved populations. Examples include making explicit underlying norms, values, and philosophies to improve cultural congruence and lessen group harms. Another interest is to support research to improve the ability of theoretical constructs and conceptual models to explain the causes of health disparities.

Jingsheng Tuo, Ph.D.

Dr. Jingsheng Tuo is a scientific review officer (SRO) in the Office of Extramural Research Administration. Before joining NIMHD, he served as SRO for the NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR), managing the HIV Coinfections and HIV Associated Cancers Study Section (HCAC) and various specific emphasis panels.

Larissa Avilés-Santa, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Larissa Avilés-Santa is the director of Clinical and Health Services Research at NIMHD. In her current role, she works with the CHSR team on fostering research aimed at improving health outcomes of health disparities populations. This may be accomplished through research designed to understand most effective preventive and clinical care practices within health care settings, while also informing population health, health policy and public policy experts.

CAPT Anthony (AJ) Johnson, Ph.D.

CAPT Anthony Johnson is an active-duty senior officer within the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) and serves as NIMHD’s Division of Intramural Research (DIR) scientific advisor and training director. He provides guidance and management of DIR training programs for NIMHD fellows and investigators and policies for scientific workforce operations.

Maryline Laude, Ph.D.

Dr. Maryline Laude serves as a Scientific Review Officer (SRO) for the Special Emphasis Panels Section at the NIMHD and as Referral Officer. Her responsibilities include organizing and managing peer review meetings to evaluate the scientific and technical merits of applications in areas of minority health and health disparities within the mission of the NIMHD. In her role, she follows the set of principles and rules of peer review established by the NIH to assure that each application receives a review that is thorough and fair.

Kimberly M. Allen, M.A.

Ms. Kimberly Allen, M.A., currently serves as the Executive Officer at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). In this position, she oversees all management services and operations as well as administrative support to the Institute, including, but not limited to, financial management, human resource management, employee and labor relations, policy development, information technology, and acquisitions. She began her career at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1999 as an administrative technician (Personnel) for the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Deborah Ismond, Ph.D.

Dr. Deborah Ismond is a scientific review officer for NIMHD. Previously, she was an intramural research psychologist with the Child Psychiatry Branch, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), where she coordinated inpatient and outpatient drug trials and other clinical research and was responsible for study implementation, data collection, and statistical analysis. Prior to returning to NIH in 2010, Dr.

Corinne Berkseth Baker

Corinne Berkseth Baker is the digital content manager in the Office of Communications and Public Liaison at NIMHD. In this role, she focuses on digital content strategy and implementation on NIMHD’s website and executes email communications and social media to further the Institute’s mission.
